Switchboard upgrade

Switchboard upgrades for EV charging

Adding an EV charger sometimes means your switchboard needs an upgrade first — for safety and for capacity. Older boards with ceramic fuses or no safety switches, or boards that are simply full, often need work before a charger can go in. We assess your board up front, tell you clearly if it needs an upgrade, and do it to code with a Certificate of Compliance.

Signs your switchboard may need upgrading

  • Old ceramic screw-in fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • No safety switches (RCDs) on the board
  • A board that's full, with no spare slots for a charger circuit
  • An older home that's never been rewired or upgraded
  • Nuisance tripping or flickering under load

Switchboard upgrade — common questions

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always — many boards already have the capacity and protection. Older boards with ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or no spare slots often need an upgrade first. We assess yours before quoting, never on install day.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

As a general market range it's usually around $1,500–$3,000, and more for a full replacement — a market figure, not our quote. We price yours after a look. See our switchboard guide for detail.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Tell-tale signs are ceramic fuses, no safety switches, a full board, or an older home that's never had electrical work. We confirm it in a free assessment before any charger work.
