A "Level 2" charger is the proper way to charge an EV at home — a dedicated wall unit that charges many times faster than a standard power point, wired safely to your switchboard. We install Level 2 chargers across Sydney and NSW with licensed electricians, and can have yours fitted and certified before your car is delivered.
Level 1 is charging from an ordinary 10A power point — around 2.4kW, or roughly 10km of range per hour, which rarely keeps up with daily driving. Level 2 is a dedicated 7kW single-phase charger (about 40km of range per hour — a full day's driving replaced overnight), or up to 22kW on three-phase power. It's faster, safer and purpose-built, on its own protected circuit rather than a shared household one.
Around 85% of Sydney homes are single-phase, where a 7kW Level 2 charger is ideal — it refills a normal day's driving while you sleep. 22kW needs three-phase power and a car that can actually accept it, which most can't yet. What is a Level 2 EV charger?
A Level 2 charger is a dedicated wall-mounted EV charger wired to your switchboard, charging at 7kW (single-phase) up to 22kW (three-phase). That's roughly 40km+ of range per hour, versus about 10km/hr from a normal power point — enough to refill a full day's driving overnight.
Is a Level 2 charger worth it over a normal power point?
For almost everyone, yes. A power point (Level 1) tops up slowly and ties up an outlet on a shared circuit. A Level 2 charger is faster, safer, on its own protected circuit, and designed for daily EV charging. We install it to code with a Certificate of Compliance.
Do I need three-phase power for a Level 2 charger?
No — a 7kW single-phase Level 2 charger works in most Sydney homes and covers typical daily driving overnight. Three-phase (22kW) only helps if your car supports it and you genuinely need the speed. We assess your supply and advise honestly.
