Government funding is the most misunderstood part of installing a home or business EV charger in Australia. Some programs are generous, some are business-only, and some have quietly paused. Here's what's actually available in 2026 — and, just as importantly, what isn't.
NSW has no residential rebate — but that's not the whole story
Let's clear up the most common misconception first: New South Wales does not currently offer a rebate to individual homeowners installing a home charger. If a site tells you otherwise, be sceptical. What NSW homeowners can often use instead is 0% interest, no-fee finance, so the install costs nothing on the day and is repaid over time.
Where NSW funding is real and significant is on the business and fleet side.
For businesses and fleets
- NSW EV Fleets Kick-Start Incentive — $3,000–$6,000 per charger port for NSW businesses with a fleet of three or more EVs, claimed alongside new EV purchases. Funding is limited and applications close in November 2026, so it rewards moving early.
- Federal DRIVEN Charger Rebate — up to $3,000 per charger and $21,000 per site, for licensed motor dealers and EV repairers installing chargers at their own premises. It runs until April 2028.
For homeowners with a novated lease
If your EV is on a novated lease or salary-packaged, the federal FBT exemption on eligible battery EVs can be worth up to around $11,000 a year in tax savings, and home charging equipment can often be packaged in too. It's not a cash grant toward the charger — it's an ongoing tax benefit — but for the right person it's the single biggest number on this page.
For the ACT and other states
The ACT Sustainable Household Scheme offers 0% interest loans up to $20,000 covering charger purchase and installation, repaid over up to ten years. Several states run periodic apartment/strata charging grants that open and close in rounds — worth checking at the time rather than assuming.
Strata and apartments
The NSW EV Ready Buildings program (which co-funded up to $80,000 per building) was fully subscribed and is paused for new applications. It may reopen — the sensible move is to register your building's interest now so you're ready first when it does. Some NSW councils (the City of Sydney, Inner West and Parramatta among them) also offer grants toward apartment and strata charging; we check what your building can currently claim rather than guessing.
