Can you install an EV charger in an apartment or strata building?

4 min read

Living in an apartment doesn't rule out home charging — it just adds a couple of steps. We install in strata and unit buildings regularly, and we handle the parts that put most people off: the approvals and the paperwork.

What's different about a strata install

  • Owners corporation approval. Running a cable to your space usually needs the building's sign-off. We prepare the request and the technical detail the committee needs to say yes.
  • Cabling from the right meter. The charger is wired so the electricity is billed to you, not the whole building — an important detail some installers get wrong.
  • Load management. In buildings with several chargers, smart load sharing keeps the building's supply within its limits so everyone can charge.

Grants for buildings

Some states co-fund shared charging infrastructure for apartment buildings. In NSW the EV Ready Buildings program (which co-funded up to $80,000 per building) is currently paused for new applications — we register your building's interest so you're ready first if it reopens. Separately, several NSW councils — including the City of Sydney, Inner West and Parramatta — offer grants toward apartment and strata charging; amounts and eligibility vary and change over time, so we check what your building can currently claim as part of the process.

The single biggest predictor of a smooth apartment install is starting the strata conversation early. We give you the paperwork and the plan to take to your committee, so it's an easy yes.

Whether it's one bay or the whole car park, we scope it and manage it end to end. See our commercial & strata work or tell us about your building.

Common questions

Do I need strata approval to install an EV charger?

Usually yes — running a cable to your car space needs the owners corporation's sign-off. We prepare the request and technical detail the committee needs, so it's an easy approval.

Who pays for the electricity in a strata EV charger install?

The charger is wired so the electricity is billed to you, not the whole building. Getting this metering right is an important detail some installers miss.

Are there grants for apartment building charging?

Some states co-fund shared charging in apartment buildings. In NSW the EV Ready Buildings program (up to $80,000 per building) is currently paused for new applications — we register your building's interest for when it reopens.
