Can you legally install your own EV charger in Australia? For a hardwired wall charger, the answer is a clear no — fixed electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. There's one narrow exception (a plug-in portable charger), and some real reasons the law is worth taking seriously here.
The legal answer
Across every Australian state and territory, installing or altering fixed wiring — which includes hardwiring an EV wall charger to your switchboard — is licensed electrical work. Doing it yourself is illegal, and it's not a grey area: unlicensed electrical work carries real fines and, more importantly, real danger. An EV charger runs a high, sustained current for hours, so a poor connection that a lighting circuit might tolerate can overheat here.
The one thing you can do yourself
You can plug a portable EV charger (a "granny charger" or a portable Level 2 unit with a compatible plug) into an existing, suitable socket — that's using an appliance, not installing wiring. The catch is that an ordinary 10A power point is slow (around 10km of range per hour) and wasn't designed for hours of continuous load, so it's a backup, not a real home-charging solution. Anything wall-mounted and hardwired needs an electrician.
Why "just get a mate to do it" costs more later
- No Certificate of Compliance. A licensed install comes with a CoC — proof the work is safe and legal. Without it you can hit problems with insurance and when you sell the house.
- Insurance risk. If unlicensed or non-compliant wiring is involved in a fire or fault, your insurer can decline the claim.
- It may need redoing. Non-compliant work often has to be torn out and redone properly — you pay twice.
